Four levels of computer training
Computers are an integral part of everyday life, affecting the way we work and live. Today, computer literacy is essential for any career, and an essential skill to be mastered by our employees.
The ability to use a computer effectively is an essential life skill. Computer skills enable people of all ages to understand and use technology to improve their personal and professional lives.
Skilled employees enable organisations to use technology more effectively, leading to increased productivity and competitiveness and ensuring that operational objectives are achieved more efficiently.
Four levels of computer training are available for Buscor employees. The course levels are explained on the following pages to provide a clear understanding of the nature and extent of courses available to employees.
Level 1: Introduction to computers
Who this course is for
This course is for absolute beginners to end user computing.
Prerequisites
Learner must have access to a computer in order to be able to do exercises to enhance the new-learned skills.

What will be covered in this course?
This course introduces you to the fundamentals of computing, explains the components of a computer, explores Operating System basics, and shows you how to use a mouse and a keyboard. The course also explains how computers can be used in different aspects of life.
By the end of this introductory course, employees will be able to use keyboard techniques to key in alpha and numeric text, symbols and special characters using a standard keyboards; apply keyboard techniques and ergonomic practices to avoid overuse injuries; and to produce sentences and paragraphs containing alpha and numeric text, symbols & special characters.
Level 2: Introduction to Windows 10 & Office 2010
Who this course is for
Must have basic keyboard skills, knows how to use the mouse and must have some exposure to Microsoft programs such as MS Word and/or MS Excel. Ideally, the employee must have completed the previous level course: Introduction to computers.
Prerequisites
Learner must have access to a computer in order to be able to do exercises to enhance the new-learned skills.

What will be covered in this course?
This course basically consists of four separate learning units:
Working with computers / The Windows Operating System
- Identify different storage devices on a computer
- Explain concepts of files on a computer in a GUI environment
- Locate files in a GUI environment
- Identify files & folders
- Create folders / directories
- Manipulation of files (file management)
Word processing: Using Microsoft Word
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of word processing
- Create, open and save documents
- Produce a document from given text
- Format and edit a document
- Check spelling and grammar in a document
Spreadsheets: Using Microsoft Excel
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of spreadsheets
- Open, create and save spreadsheets
- Produce a spreadsheet from given specifications
- Format a spreadsheet
Electronic communication: Internet & Email Basics
- Basic Internet skills
- Terminology, concepts and terms of the Internet
- Use GUI-based browser to display a web page
- Navigate on the Internet
- Use a search engine to locate information; obtain information from a website
- Email
- Understand the concepts and terms of electronic messaging
- Create and send an email message
- Receive and respond to emails
Level 3: International Computer Driver License (ICDL)
ICDL is the world’s leading computer skills certification. To date more than 14 million people have engaged with the ICDL programme, in over 150 countries, through a network of over 24,000 ICDL Accredited Test Centres (ATCs).
Buscor is an accredited Training and Test Centre, providing ICDL training to Buscor employees since 2007.
The ICDL qualification consists of the following modules:
- Module 1: Computer Essentials
- Module 2: Microsoft Word
- Module 3: Microsoft Excel
- Module 4: Online Essentials
Who this course is for
This is the “flagship” range of courses with regard to computer training in Buscor. With an internationally accepted standard of computer skills, this range of courses will increase overall efficiency and productivity of employees, with specific reference to the following skills: This is the “flagship” range of courses with regard to computer training in Buscor. - Produce professional quality documents and presentations efficiently without support from others
- Use formulas and functions to efficiently and effectively carry out complex calculations
- Enable integration of ICT to existing business processes
Prerequisites
Candidates must have very good keyboard skills, know how to use the mouse and must have successfully completed the Level 2: Introduction to Windows 10 & Office 2010 course.
Duration
The complete course (four modules) has duration of 12 days.
Candidates who wish to participate in the external examination will have to:
- Prove their readiness for the external exam by writing an internal exam (duration 4 hours)
- If the required standard of 80% is achieved in the above-mentioned internal exam, candidates will also have to attend an additional 4 days of exam-preparation activities.
- Heads of Departments / Supervisors / Team Leaders should therefore make provision that employees will be out-of-office for at least 17 (NON-CONSCUTIVE) days to complete this qualification.

Module 1: Computer Essentials

On completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
- Understand key concepts relating to ICT, computers, devices and software.
- Start up and shut down a computer.
- Work effectively on the computer desktop using icons, windows.
- Adjust the main operating system settings and use built-in help features.
- Create a simple document and print an output.
- Know about the main concepts of file management and be able to efficiently organise files and folders.
- Understand key storage concepts and use utility software to compress and extract large files.
- Understand network concepts and connection options and be able to connect to a network.
- Understand the importance of protecting data and devices from malware, and the importance of backing up data.
- Recognise considerations relating to green IT, accessibility, and user health.
Module 2: Word Processing – Microsoft Word

What will be covered in this course?
On completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
- Work with documents and save them in different file formats.
- Choose built-in options, such as the Help function, to enhance productivity.
- Create and edit small-sized word processing documents that will be ready to share and distribute.
- Apply different formats to documents to enhance them before distribution; recognise good practice in choosing the appropriate formatting options. Insert tables, images, and drawn objects into documents.
- Prepare documents for mail merge operations.
- Adjust document page settings.
- Check and correct spelling before finally printing documents.
Module 3: Spreadsheets – Microsoft Excel

What will be covered in this course?
On completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
- Work with spreadsheets and save them in different file formats.
- Choose built-in options, such as the Help function, within the application to enhance productivity.
- Enter data into cells; use good practice in creating lists.
- Select, sort and copy, move and delete data.
- Edit rows and columns in a worksheet.
- Copy, move, delete, and appropriately rename worksheets.
- Create mathematical and logical formulas using standard spreadsheet functions; use good practice in formula creation; recognise error values in formulas.
- Format numbers and text content in a spreadsheet.
- Choose, create, and format charts to communicate information meaningfully.
- Adjust spreadsheet page settings.
- Check and correct spreadsheet content before finally printing spreadsheets.
Module 4: Online Essentials – Internet & Email

On completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
- Understand web browsing and online security concepts.
- Understand web browsing and online security concepts.
- Use the web browser and manage browser settings, bookmarks, and web outputs.
- Search effectively for online information and critically evaluate web content.
- Understand key copyright and data protection issues.
- Understand concepts of online communities, communications and email.
- Send, receive e-mails and manage email settings.
- Organise and search emails and use calendars..
Level 4: Excel Spreadsheets (Intermediate to Advanced)
This module is a high-level certification program which presents candidates with the opportunity to bring their spreadsheet skills to an expert level.
Completion of this module will enable candidates to master the more advanced functions of spreadsheet applications, enabling them to produce more sophisticated reports, and to perform complex mathematical and statistical calculations, thus saving time and improving productivity in the completion of tasks.
Prerequisites
Candidates must have extensive background working with Excel, preferably must have completed ICDL level of training in Excel.

The complete course (four modules) has duration of 2 days.

- Apply advanced formatting options such as conditional formatting and customised number formatting and handle worksheets.
- Use functions such as those associated with logical, statistical, financial and mathematical operations.
- Create charts and apply advanced chart formatting features.
- Work with tables and lists to analyse, filter and sort data.
- Create and use scenarios.
- Validate and audit spreadsheet data.
- Enhance productivity by working with named cell ranges, macros and templates.
- Use linking, embedding and importing features to integrate data.
- Collaborate on and review spreadsheets.
- Apply spreadsheet security features.
