Soft Skills

So what is Soft Skills?

Soft skills are a combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, character traits, attitudes and career attributes.

Soft skills are character traits and interpersonal skills that characterize a person’s relationships with other people. In the workplace, soft skills are considered a complement to hard skills, which refer to a person’s knowledge and occupational skills.

Soft Skills is thus an all-embracing term referring to various behaviours that can assist people to work and socialise well with others. In short, they are the good manners and personality traits needed to get along with others and build positive relationships.

Unlike hard skills, which include a person’s technical skill set and ability to perform certain functional tasks, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries.

It’s often said that hard skills will get you an interview but you need soft skills to get — and keep — the job.

Employee engagement is a heightened emotional and intellectual connection that an employee has for his/her job, organisation, manager or co-workers that – in turn – influence him/her to apply additional discretionary effort to his/her work. One cannot buy engagement, and it certainly cannot be demanded.  In truth, the extent to which employees are engaged has a lot less to do with them and a lot more to do with their supervisor and the organisation as a whole.

RESPECT = acronym for the 7 drivers used to create an Engaged Workforce / Team

7 Drivers of RESPECT

  • R  Recognition: Employees feel acknowledged and appreciated for their contributions. People are rewarded based on their work performance
  • Empowerment: Supervisors provide employees with the tools. (Resources and training to succeed).
  • S  Supportive feedback: Supervisors provide employees with timely, specific feedback in a supportive, sincere and constructive manner
  • P  Partnering: Employees are treated as business partners, they take part in business decision making and understand “the bigger picture”
  • E  Expectations: Supervisors ensure that goals & objectives are clearly established & communicated
  • C  Consideration: Supervisors, managers and team members demonstrate consideration, caring, thoughtfulness toward one another Supervisors actively seek to understand employees’ opinions and concerns, understanding when employees experience personal problems

Being well presented in the workplace – in a presentation, in a meeting, during a discussion with a colleague or client is essential.

Delivering presentations in the business or corporate setting is no longer reserved for the “top dogs” and “big bosses”. These days, no matter the position or department you belong to, you are expected to stand up and be able to present at some point, be it for internal or external audiences, bringing good news or bad.

Having the confidence and being able to communicate effectively is an indispensable skill, which is why more employers are investing to train their people to become engaging communicators.

The broad learning objective of this course is to develop the awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes of participants needed to deliver effective professional presentations. The course is designed so that participants understand the theory of good communication prior to preparing and delivering a presentation. The course is divided between what good communication is, how to prepare an effective presentation, and delivering your presentation in order to have a persuasive impact on the audience.
